“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5)

Three basic factors contribute to the destruction of a society; when people become ‘arrogant, overfed and unconcerned’ (Ezekiel 16:49) Sodom was destroyed for these three things. When a people become proud, their high minds excuse them from basic decency. The Sodomites grew so proud and ‘arrogant’ that they thought they could leave the natural order of sexuality and change it to homosexuality.

A partial reason for their pride was that they were ‘overfed’. They had so much bread and food that eating and pleasure became their whole lifestyle. Finally, they were ‘unconcerned’ and idle. The men of Sodom were so wealthy that they had little to do with their time. People who are bored and unconcerned about others gradually begin to live for pleasure.

How can we keep from these three deadly diseases of society? We must humble ourselves in prayer before God continually. We must fast regularly to remind ourselves that ‘man shall not live by bread alone’. We must work for the kingdom of God, showing concern for and compassion to others and not just living for pleasure.

“I refuse to be proud and boastful but will be humble and meek, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble in Jesus Name, Amen.”
