“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)

To understand the above verse more fully, we must establish the meaning of the word “Mammon”. One Bible replaces the word mammon with the word money. However mammon means more than money.

Mammon is an evil, spiritual power that grips people and enslaves them through the medium of money. Mammon is not money itself, but the spiritual power that works in the world and lives of millions of people through their attitudes towards money. We must then decide who is first, God or Money.

It is a choice of whom we will serve, either God or mammon. Jesus set the matter straight when He stated: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33.

Jesus did not say that we have to be without “these things”, but He says that we must not put these things first. We must put the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness first in our lives. This is our commitment to God, His Kingdom and His Purposes. Do not chase after money. You must chase after the Kingdom of God and money will pursue you.

I have only one Lord and He is Jesus Christ my Lord. He is my strength and provider and I trust only in Him, Amen.
