“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine”

(Proverbs 3:9-10)

The principle of putting God first runs all the way through the Bible. In the Third Chapter of Proverbs, we find two beautiful verses that say the same thing. The “Barns” and the “Vats” are all of your material needs. They will be abundantly supplied and will overflow when you honor God with your wealth. The way in which you honor God with your wealth is by giving Him the “First Fruits”. This means setting aside the first (or best) portion for God. We either honor or dishonor God with our money. God does not want our tips. When we behave stingily, we insult God.

Further, putting your money ahead of God is also idolatry. When you seek money first, you are making money your God, which is rightly called idolatry. In our contemporary culture, far more people have made money their God rather than the true God. We must avoid being covetous. Faith is necessary to break the control of mammon in your life. At some point, every Christian has to do something to release them from the domination of mammon. As you honour the Lord with your wealth, you can confidently look to Him for your provision. Begin to see yourself as a tither and a giver.

As I honor the Lord with my substance and First Fruits of all my increase, my barns will be filled with plenty, Amen.
